3D Strain Visualization: Carbon Fiber Beam
Using Luna’s ODiSI, real time strain measurements are reported every 625 microns along a single telecom-grade optical fiber that is both surface bonded and embedded in a carbon fiber composite panel. As the carbon fiber beam is cantilevered, the full field strain profile shows higher strain gradients around rivet holes, demonstrating the ability to detect potential defects and failure points. While two points along fiber are plotted to show correlation to two surface mounted foil gages, the remaining distributed data provided by the fiber shows tremendous detail about the composite structure. Mapping Luna’s high resolution strain data onto a 3D model demonstrates the ability to use Luna’s high resolution data for 3D visualization and FEA model comparison.
